RARE VERY LARGE ANTIQUE 21 RUBY JEWEL ILLINOIS BUNN SPECIAL POCKET WATCH

Description:

You are bidding on a rare antique Illinois Watch Company pocket watch that was made in 1895.  This watch is a very large mens 18 size (55mm’s in diameter) housed in a gold filled open face case.  This watch is a rarity as it is a circular first pattern damaskeened 21 Jewel Bunn Special.  Only around 700 of these were made in 21 Jewel Open Face.  The watch is also from a very early run of 21 Jewel Bunn specials and should really be a gold inlaid circle 3rd pattern watch as the serial number range 1283500 to 1283700 were earmarked as all 3rd pattern, but this one has shown up in the run.  So this watch is a great find.  As you can also see this watch has the very early ’21 Ruby Jewel’ text styling which is only found on the very early Bunn Special runs.

In total Illinois made 58968 of these Model 6 21 Jewel Bunn Special movements and over 5 million Illinois movements in total so this will help you understand the rarity of this piece with only around 700 made.  The movement in general is in very good condition as you can see.  The Bunn Special grade is very sought after and was one of the highest grades of watches on offer from the Illinois Watch Company at the time.  The watch has screwed down solid gold jewel settings and has solid gold balance screws.  This is a railroad grade watch and is adjusted to temperature, positions and isochronism.  The movement’s serial number is 1283545.

The double sunk dial on this watch is in good presentable condition and is the correct dial for this movement.  This dial has some small hairlines and only a couple of flea bit edge chips which can hardly be noticed.  The crystal is thick glass and is in very good clear condition with no chips.

The case is a nice and heavy gold filled dust proof swing out style case from the Crescent Watch Case Co.  The lid screws down tight with no gaps as you can see in the photos.  The case does show wear and some brassing on the some of the edges of the case and on the stem and bow.  The case is a smooth polished piece. The great thing about this case is that there are no other screw marks on it so the movement is original to the case from new.

The watch is stem wound and the hands are lever set.  The hands set very well but you do need to ensure to hold the crown down to set the hands otherwise the gears will not fully engage and the hands will not move correctly.  The watch currently runs very strongly.

If you collect Bunn Specials then I am sure you will like this Bunn Special.  Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase a very unique and rare circular first pattern Bunn Special.

Overall Condition:  Good.
