MASSIVE GOLD ANTIQUE ILLINOIS CURRIER GRADE POCKET WATCH

Description:

You are bidding on a spectacular antique Illinois Watch Company pocket watch that was made in 1880.  This gold filled watch is a very large mens 18 size watch which is 55mm’s in diameter with a stunning Gold Filled Hunter case. This watch is big and beautiful and would make an impressive addition to your collection.

The case is in fantastic condition with some spectacular hand engraving. The front and back show a similar design with fancy floral detailing and a bird engraved. The back lid has an added feature of homestead which is still clearly visible. All the case lids snap closed well with no large gaps.  The lift spring works very strongly and springs the case lid wide open.  Both the front and back case lids open perfectly to slightly less than 90 degrees which confirms that the hinges have not been stretched in any way.  The hinges are still tight and have no sideways movement.  This is a quality 20 year case and is in amazing condition with no brassing.  There are no dents or major scratches on this case (a small scratch on the dust cover from opening). The dust cover also has the inscription E.E. Huston 1909.  Due to the sheer size of this case, it is impressive to look at and heavy to hold in your hand.

The movement is a gold gilded full plate Currier Grade which is a model 2 with 13 jewels. The serial number on the watch is 339862 which places production at approximately 1880 – that makes this watch 130 years old!!  The movement is also classed as a transition model, which heralded the change from Hunter movement to Open Face movement which makes it more collectable. There was only about 3500 of this model made which makes it an uncommon movement. The Springfield Illinois branding is beautifully engraved on the movement in the Old English style, and the balance cock displaying the intricate floral pattern.

The enamel dial is in presentable condition. There are a few hairlines but it is still readable. The classic roman numerals look great and the spade hands are in excellent condition. The crystal is glass and is also in excellent condition with no chips or scratches.

The watch can be stem wound or key wound and the hands are lever set.  The hands set very well and the watch currently runs very well.
