L161 NR ANTIQUE AMERICAN WALTHAM SOLID 14k GOLD HUNTING CASE POCKET WATCH 1895
Item Description
Antique American Waltham Watch Company 14k Hunting Case. This watch has an intricately engraved hunters case in a ornate star pattern. The case measures 1.40" in diameter and the serial number 6928963 dates this watch to 1894-1895. Front of the hunting case has a large star in the middle and smaller stars all around, back matches, except for the large star having a pattern. (so you could tell the front from the back). Waltham was the first American Watch Co. and pioneered almost all of the early developments in watches and watch making in the United States. The American Waltham Watch Company had its beginnings in 1850 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. They were exploring new ideas in watch manufacturing, such as using jewels, and making dials. It took months to adjust the watches to the point where they were any better than other widely available timepieces. The first watches produced went to officials of the company, and it was not until 1853 that the first watches were offered for sale to the public. In January, 1859 the Waltham Improvement Co. and the Appleton, Tracy & Co. merged to form the American Watch Company. American Horology owes much to the brilliant visionaries of the Waltham Watch Company. Bacon, Church, Dennison, Fogg, Howard, Marsh, Webster and Woerd all contributed greatly to American watchmaking. Waltham continued to manufacture watches until 1957. This is a outstanding watch to add to any collection or give as a gift.
